Areas of Expertise
Professor Partnoy teaches and writes in the areas of business and corporate law.
Professional Experience
Partnoy worked as a derivatives structurer at Morgan Stanley during the mid-1990s and then spent two years as a lawyer at Covington & Burling.. He is the co-director of USD’s Center for Corporate and Securities Law. He joined the USD School of Law faculty in 1997.
Honors and Affiliations
Partnoy testified as an expert regarding various aspects of financial markets and regulation before both houses of Congress, and frequently advises regulators and major corporations. He writes for The New York Times and the Financial Times, and has appeared on numerous media programs, such as 60 Minutes, NewsHour with Jim Leher, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He was awarded USD’s Thorsnes Prize for Excellence in Teaching in 1998 and 2009.

Partnoy’s publications include Wait: the Art and Science of Delay (PublicAffairs, 2012); Business Organization and Finance: Legal and Economic Principles, 11th Ed. (with Coffee, Jr., and Klein) (Foundation Press, 2010); Corporations: A Contemporary Approach (with Palmiter) (West, 2009); F.I.A.S.C.O.: Blood in the Water on Wall Street (W. W. Norton and Company, 2009) Infectious Greed: How Deceit and Risk Corrupted the Financial Markets (PublicAffairs, 2009). His book, The Match King: Ivar Kreuger, The Financial Genius Behind a Century of Wall Street Scandals (PublicAffairs, 2010)—about the 1920s markets and Ivar Kreuger, who many consider the father of modern financial schemes—was a finalist for the Financial Times-Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year in 2009.
