Reaching Out in Community

Forming lasting connections locally and globally

Set at the edge of an international gateway, the University of San Diego is committed to being an engaged partner with both the global and local community. Our campus is just 22 miles from the U.S./Mexico border; one of the many reasons that USD students graduate with a comprehensive understanding of the global landscape.

Get Involved

Participants in University Ministry's annual retreat, El Encuentro Espiritual, travel south of the border to connect with another faith community. "The fundamental goal of this joint retreat is to allow students from USD and youth from San Eugenio to share in understanding their faith and identities," explains student leader Maribel Orozco.

Community Engagement

Getting involved with the local community is a key component of short term study abroad programs that USD offers in South Africa, Jamaica and London.

"In Jamaica, I was privileged. Privileged because what I brought as 'spending money,' was enough to pay rent for six months at one of the houses I visited. I was privileged because the average college education in Jamaica is at trade school learning a craft or skill, whereas my education allows me to use not just my skills, but my brain. It dawned on me that I was in a place where I was in a position to help others."

Faith Formation

As residents of a border city, our students can delve into issues such as international business, immigration, trade and cross-cultural learning. Many local and international communities collaborate with students, faculty and staff to address important social issues, such as homelessness, migration and sustainability.

Through a values-based education and an ecosystem for innovation and social change, USD students gain practical skills in critical thinking, problem solving, empathy and teamwork. Below are just a few examples of ways to work with others in our community and the wider world around us.
