Elvarea Bennett, a vibrant and creative student from Kansas City, Missouri, has found a home in the Department of Theatre here at USD. Known for their love of iced lavender oat milk lattes and colorful fashion, Bennett's journey into theatre has been nothing short of magical.

"I’ve done theatre and performance my entire life, but coming to college, I had planned on studying something else," Bennett shared. "However, I immediately realized in my first semester of freshman year that I was (and am) fully in love with theatre. It was a love affair that had to continue. I needed to keep going and learn more. Getting to create art and share stories is the most beautiful thing in the world, and I’m so grateful I get to do it every day."

Bennett’s artistic inclinations extend beyond the stage, reflecting a deep appreciation for all forms of creative expression. When not immersed in theatre, they also enjoy painting, dancing ballet or relaxing at the beach.

Bennett speaks highly of the close-knit community within the Theatre Department. "The department is small, so everyone knows everyone. And everyone is creative and interesting. I love that I’m surrounded by artists. I’ve found some of my closest friends through this department. Even those whom I’m not close to, there's a ‘we are all on the same team’  feeling which has been incredibly helpful as I've gone through school." Bennett notes that there’s an incredible respect and undeniable support for one another's creative ideas in all capacities.

Reflecting on their academic journey, Bennett fondly recalls their favorite class, Designing a Play, THEA-305, with Robin Roberts for Anon(ymous). They recalled the other students on the design team as being dedicated, creative and excited to learn and have fun. Speaking of their creation, "I designed something I was proud of. I’m super excited to take the same class again and work on The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time this spring!"

For those considering a path in theatre, Bennett offers valuable advice: "Come into it with enthusiasm and vulnerability, and that will make all the difference. Theatre courses are often graded on willingness to take risks and explore creative ideas. The classes are small, so you have to be present and open. The confidence to conduct yourself with that openness will take you far." Elvarea Bennett's story is a testament to the transformative power of theatre and the supportive community that fosters artistic growth at USD. Their journey continues to inspire fellow students and aspiring artists alike.
