History Professor Celebrates 20 Years of 'At Risk for Huntington's Disease' Blog

This month marks the 20th anniversary of At Risk for Huntington's Disease, a blog by Kenneth P. Serbin, PhD, that has chronicled his personal journey and the broader fight against Huntington's Disease (HD). Serbin, a professor of history at the University of San Diego (USD), began the blog on January 10, 2005, with the goal of "squeezing as much life into my days as possible" before the onset of HD symptoms.
Dr. Serbin's mother passed away at the age of 68 after a two-decade struggle with HD, a genetically caused brain disorder that leads to uncontrollable bodily movements and cognitive decline. Watching his mother's painful battle, Dr. Serbin tested positive for the HD gene in 1999. Despite expecting to develop full-blown HD by now, Dr. Serbin, who turned 65 last month, remains symptom-free, which he attributes to possible modifier genes.
"This month I am celebrating the 20 years of my blog At Risk for Huntington’s Disease," Dr. Serbin wrote in a recent post. "Each day of good health is a blessing."
The blog, which has reached its 336th article, has become a vital resource for those affected by HD. It documents the "new and harrowing experience of living in the gray zone between a genetic test result and disease onset," Dr. Serbin noted. Over the years, At Risk for Huntington's Disease has covered a wide range of topics, with a significant focus on the complex developments in HD therapeutic research.
Dr. Serbin's writing has provided hope and insight to many in the HD community. His blog has addressed the challenges of living with the knowledge of a positive HD gene test, the emotional and physical toll of the disease and the ongoing quest for a cure. The blog's impact extends beyond personal stories. It has become a platform for discussing key developments in HD research, including the latest advancements in therapeutic approaches. Dr. Serbin's dedication to raising awareness and fostering a sense of community among those affected by HD has made At Risk for Huntington's Disease an invaluable resource.
As Dr. Serbin reflects on two decades of blogging, he remains committed to his mission. "I plan to continue blogging as long as health permits – and until the quest for a cure is complete," he wrote.
