USD Athletics - Fall/Winter 2024 Update

usd men's soccer celebrates at torero stadium

It’s been a big 2024-2025 season for USD Athletics so far, with men’s soccer and men’s tennis leading the charge alongside big moments for women’s volleyball, football and men’s golf.

On the pitch, USD men’s soccer reached a No. 3 national ranking before winning its third consecutive West Coast Conference Championship and hosting two rounds of the NCAA Tournament on campus in front of a combined 5,000-plus fans at Torero Stadium. With a final record of 15-3-2, and 7-1 in conference play, they posted their most wins since 2000, and reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament for just the third time in program history. Postseason accolades included WCC Coach of the Year honors for Brian Quinn alongside a WCC Goalkeeper of the Year award nod for Donovan Parisian, four WCC First Team awards, one WCC Second Team award, two WCC Honorable Mentions, and two WCC All Freshman Team awards.

On the court, USD men’s tennis’s Oliver Tarvet and Stian Klaassen became the first male student-athletes to clinch All-American status this year by sweeping the ITA All-American Championships singles and doubles titles in early October. Their remarkable achievement marks the first time that a Torero has won a title at the event. Tarvet, a junior and the No. 3 ranked player in college tennis, became just the fifth player to win both the singles and doubles title at the season's first big national tournament, and the first since 2015.

On the hardwood, USD volleyball had plenty of big moments, with head coach Jennifer Petrie earning her program-record 500th career victory with a 3-0 sweep on September 26 at Gonzaga. Her team went on to win nearly 20 games, including one over rival BYU, which was ranked No. 17 nationally. Eleven end-of-year conference awards went to the Toreros when their season came to a close, including WCC Setter of the Year recognition for Kylie Munday, a WCC Freshman of the Year selection for Isabel Clark, and three All-WCC First Team honors.

On the gridiron, USD football went a perfect 6-0 at Torero Stadium in 2024 (including an unforgettable win over rival Cal Poly) under second-year head coach Brandon Moore as they secured their most total victories since 2019. Twenty-one Toreros were celebrated with All-Pioneer Football League honors, including PFL Offensive Player of the Year recognition for wide receiver Ja’seem Reed, a PFL Defensive Player of the Year nod for defensive back Eric Haney, and three All-PFL First Team placements.

On the course, USD golf is off to a hot start to begin new head coach Evan Emerick’s tenure. The Toreros set a program record by going 49 under par at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational on October 8 up in the Bay Area before taking first place at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational a week later to secure the first victory of the Emerick Era at USD.

The calendar now turns to basketball, as San Diego men’s and women’s hoops are in full swing as they take on an exciting mix of opponents both on the road and at the Jenny Craig Pavilion during their 2024-2025 schedules.
