Working towards a Culture of Encounter at USD

Working towards a Culture of Encounter at USD

The following statement from President Harris outlines policies and protocols around campus assembly:

Dear USD Community,

As an educational institution committed to the Catholic intellectual tradition, USD recognizes the fundamental role of free inquiry, academic freedom and freedom of expression to explore and discuss complex issues in a safe, respectful environment.

Campus policy allows USD community members to safely and peacefully assemble and express views within reasonable restrictions of time and place, and in a manner consistent with the mission and core values of the university.

Unfortunately, an event took place on the Paseo de Colachis today that was not organized in accordance with campus policy. When this happens, the university does not have adequate time to prepare for the event. This puts the safety of those participating and our greater campus community at risk.

It is also important to note that antisemitic, Islamophobic and other forms of discriminatory language have no place at USD, even during public assemblies, and we condemn the use of such language on our campus.

The safety and security of our community members is always our top priority. We remind those community members who wish to hold events on our campus that our policies are in place for the safety of all, and adhering to them is part of being a responsible member of our university.

As we wrestle with complex global issues, I would ask that we reflect on the words of Pope Francis who calls on us all to do what we can to create a “culture of encounter” where “we find brothers and sisters, in which we can also speak with those who think differently, who hold different beliefs.” My hope is that as a university community, we do our best to create a culture of encounter on our campus.

We are a diverse community of learners with a variety of backgrounds and experiences, and USD’s deeply held mission brings us together to create a more inclusive, sustainable and hopeful world. To do so requires us to engage in topics with civility and empathy, especially during such turbulent times both domestically and around the globe.

Anyone who feels that they need additional support is always encouraged to utilize the resources available on campus, included below.

Peace,

Jim

James T. Harris III, D.Ed.

President
