Athletics: USD Softball to Break Ground on $14.5 Million Upgrade to USD Softball Complex

Softball Groundbreaking USD Softball Head Coach MJ Knighten speaks during a groundbreaking event on Tuesday, May 14, 2024.

The University of San Diego athletic department has announced the groundbreaking of a $14.5 million project to upgrade the USD Softball Complex.

"With every milestone as significant as this one, it's crucial to recognize not only the competitive implications of this facility but also the profound impact it will have on our student-athletes, enriching their athletic, academic, and overall collegiate experiences," said USD Associate Vice President and Executive Director of Athletics Kimya Massey. "This new chapter epitomizes our commitment to nurturing excellence and success within our athletic programs as well as enhancing recruiting and the overall experience of our student-athletes."

The $14.5 million project, made possible in part by a lead gift from an anonymous donor, will revamp all facets of the softball facility. The USD Softball Complex will feature a cutting-edge Dura Edge Collegiate infield and an artificial turf outfield. Additionally, the project includes the installation of modern bullpens, dugouts, press box area, concourse, concession areas, and restrooms.

An integral component of the upgrade is the construction of a state-of-the-art team building spanning approximately 4,500 square feet. This facility will accommodate a new team locker room, sports medicine facility, equipment room, coaches' offices, and a team lounge designed to facilitate film review sessions, team meals, studying, community events, and more.

"Under the exceptional leadership of head coach MJ Knighten, we embark on this new chapter with a shared vision," continued Massey. "Beyond simply constructing best-in-class facilities, this initiative signifies a pivotal moment — one that will play a vital role in strengthening our USD community. Now, our softball student-athletes have a place to call their own. Building culture and relationships within a team is paramount to success and this incredible facility will give our student-athletes an opportunity to do that on a continual basis."

In addition, the facility will include chairback seating for 386 spectators, with the capacity for expansion to host NCAA Regional and Super Regional events.

"The facility is going to be a game-changer from recruiting to overall San Diego softball pride," said head coach Knighten. "The current roster and the future athletes will be able to call home to something special. This facility will allow us to build more outreach in the softball community, in addition to allowing alumni to come see the hard work they put into making this happen. We are beyond grateful for donors to see how important this facility will be to truly create a championship culture."

These enhancements to the softball facility are the latest in a series of ambitious and state-of-the-art projects by the university and athletic program. Upgrades to the Jenny Craig Pavilion are currently underway, alongside the creation of the brand-new USD Wellness Center, Basketball Practice Center, and the recently completed Purcell Family Championship Golf Practice Facility, located adjacent to the softball field.

Completion is slated for the spring of 2025.
