Celebrating the Graduating Class of 2024: Ana Lopez-Rodezno

The University of San Diego would like to congratulate all of our wonderful students who are graduating this year. We will be spotlighting students from across campus, sharing their educational journeys leading up to graduation.

Ana Lopez-Rodezno is graduating from the School of Leadership and Education Sciences with a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a Multiple Subjects Credential and a Bilingual Authorization. 

Lopez-Rodezno was born in Honduras and moved to Los Angeles when she was five years old with her mother, stepfather and three younger sisters. When she started elementary school, she didn’t know English and was classified as an English language learner. In fourth grade, she had a teacher who took the time to help her grow her English skills. After that school year, Lopez-Rodezno says she reclassified and was no longer labeled as an English language learner. 

“I was able to fully participate in class. I fell in love with reading and learning and it was all through the work that she did with me,” said Lopez-Rodezno. She says it was that experience that really made her want to become a teacher and have that same impact on students. “When I see a student understand something and something finally clicks after I have been trying to explain it in different ways and trying to show them different ways that they can learn it, it is something that makes me extremely happy.”

Ana Lopez-Rodezno se gradúa de la Facultad de Liderazgo y Ciencias de la Educación con una Maestría en Educación en Currículo e Instrucción con credencial de Materias Múltiples y autorización bilingüe.

Lopez-Rodezno nació en Honduras y se mudó a Los Ángeles cuando tenía cinco años con su madre, su padrastro y sus tres hermanas menores. Cuando comenzó la escuela primaria, no sabía inglés y fue clasificada como estudiante de idioma inglés. En cuarto grado, tuvo una maestra que se tomó el tiempo para ayudarla a mejorar sus habilidades en inglés. Después de ese año escolar, Lopez-Rodezno dice que se reclasificó y ya no fue etiquetada como estudiante de inglés.

“Pude participar plenamente en clase. Me enamoré de la lectura y el aprendizaje y fue gracias al trabajo que ella hizo conmigo,” dijo Lopez-Rodezno. Ana dice que fue esa experiencia la que realmente la hizo querer convertirse en maestra y tener el mismo impacto en sus estudiantes.

“Cuando yo estaba en la primaria o secundaria nunca tuve una maestra hondureña o centro americana y los maestros que tuve que eran Latinos, fueron pocos. Es difícil poder aprender o seguir adelante sin verse uno reflejado en sus maestros.”
