At the annual Cropper Creative Writing Student Reading held on April 25, 2024, the winners and runners-up of the 2023-2024 Cropper Creative Writing Contest were announced!

This year's winner in fiction, judged by Shena McAuliffe, is "Our Lot" by Anthony Barbero, with honorable mention going to "When Something's Rising" by Shea Salamack.

In nonfiction, judged by Thomas Dolan, the winner is Abigail Hinrichs for "Something about God and Guilt"; honorable mention goes to "Too Dark" by Zoey Delgado.

In poetry, judged by Craig Santos Perez, the winner is Haley Dinsmore for "High School"; honorable mention goes to Harrison Seymour for "The Silent Opera."

The winners in each genre are awarded $150, and all honorees (winners and runners-up) will have their aforementioned pieces published in this year’s issue of the Alcalá Review. The Alcalá Review’s 2024 journal issue will be presented at their annual publishing party on May 2, 2024.

The Cropper Creative Writing Contest is held annually and USD awards three prizes each year in honor of Lindsay J. Cropper. The $150 cash prizes recognize undergraduate achievement in the genres of poetry, fiction and nonfiction. Submissions open in late fall. Winners and honorable mention for each category are published in the annual issue of USD’s Alcalá Review.

Congratulations to all the winners and runners-up!
