The Spanish translation of Linda Vista is “beautiful view.” And on a recent sun-splashed spring Saturday, the vibrant community that bears that name played host to a wonderful celebration promoting community, culture and connection.

USD was well represented at the 39th annual Linda Vista Multicultural Street Fair and Parade, as roughly 250 students, faculty and staff participated in events ranging from CPR demonstrations to a parade march. Since its founding in 1949, USD has been committed to cultivating lasting and beneficial relationships with its neighboring communities, and that connection was on full display at the day-long event created by community patrons to promote cultural awareness and understanding.

"USD is proud to be part of Linda Vista for the past 75 years, and this community has given so much to our campus," said USD Associate Vice President of Student Affairs Charlotte Johnson, who served as parade marshall in honor of the university’s 75th anniversary. “We not only share a common space, we share a vision of a world where cultural diversity is both respected and appreciated.”

There was something for everyone at this year’s event, which featured a World Arts Village of local artists and artisans, an international food court, carnival and kids’ zones, and an education lane where USD students, faculty and staff hosted booths sponsored by the School of Law, Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, SOLES and the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering.

“This community, this area, means so much to San Diego, and it means so much to me to be here sharing this special day with you,” said San Diego Mayor and USD alumnus Todd Gloria '00 (BA), who provided welcome remarks at the event. “I grew up very close to this community. I went to high school right down the road. I’m a proud USD alum. And I’m proud to serve this wonderful and diverse community, and to be able to share this experience and celebrate this amazing neighborhood.”
