Sweet Talks: Native American Heritage Month

Sweet Talks: Native American Heritage Month

In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, the Center for Inclusion and Diversity is collaborating with the Office of the Tribal Liaison to reflect on the importance of Unpacking Identity to support the diversity of representation for Native and Indigenous students at USD. This event will be facilitated by College Corps Fellows and the Tribal Liaison to support participants in connecting to and learning about the impacts of colonial influence on identity that can impact each student, and the academic, professional or community spaces they are navigating. This tabletop workshop style of creating discussion and reflection is also a way for our campus to gain perspective and strengthen awareness on the importance of planning for and centering services to meet Native and Indigenous students where they are that demonstrates academic equity at a predominately white institution (PWI).

We invite any and all members of the USD community to join us on Thursday, Nov. 16, to engage in this unique opportunity for discussion and reflection. The event space is in Plaza de San Diego (between Maher and Guadalupe Hall, in front of the fountain). However in case of inclement weather, it will be held at the UC 128. We'll provide desserts and together we’ll uplift conversations aligned with representation for Native and Indigenous students.

The objective of the Sweet Talk is to bring together individuals of the USD community for an intentional conversation that is centered on topics around diversity and inclusion. Each month we will discuss a new topic and explore the different perspectives and thoughts that exist within our space. As we engage in this conversation, we will enjoy a sweet treat. This event will be open to all members of our community and it is our hope that it will foster an understanding of the multitude of experiences and backgrounds that comprise our USD community. Sweet Talk is designed to be an equitable and inclusive space for everyone, but especially those who hold identities that have been historically underserved in higher education.
