Justice Martin J. Jenkins

SAN DIEGO (May 16, 2023)  Justice Martin J. Jenkins will address University of San Diego (USD) School of Law graduates at the 66th commencement on Saturday, May 20.

Justice Jenkins was confirmed as an Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court in November 2020. Previously, he served as a Senior Judicial Appointments Advisor to Governor Gavin Newsome. Justice Jenkins served as an Associate Justice of the First District Court of Appeal, and as a United States District Court judge for the Northern District of California.

Justice Jenkins was a player for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawk prior to attending law school. He holds a degree from Santa Clara University and a juris doctor from University of San Francisco (USF) School of Law, where he received the Judge Harold J. Haley Award for “exceptional distinction in scholarship, character and activities.” After completing his studies, Justice Jenkins joined the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. He later served a trial attorney for the United States Department of Justice, Civil Right Division-Criminal Section in Washington D.C.

Justice Jenkins has received numerous awards, The St. Thomas More Award, “in Recognition of his Distinguished Record of Service and Dedication to His Church, His Community and His Family,” as well as the 2009 Children’s Advocacy Award presented by Legal Services for Children. The American Inns of Courts named him its 2022 recipient of the Lewis F. Powell, Jr. Award for Professionalism and Ethics.
