The Great California ShakeOut

Dear Campus Community:

On Thursday morning, October 21 at 10:21 a.m., millions of people in Southern California will “DROP, COVER, and HOLD-ON” as part of The Great California ShakeOut annual earthquake drill. USD will use this opportunity to test our emergency mass notification systems, including our indoor and outdoor notification systems.  At approximately 10:21 a.m., on Thursday, October 21, we would like every staff member, faculty member and student on campus to DROP, COVER and HOLD-ON for 60 seconds.  If you need to update your cell phone number, please log into the secure MySanDiego portal at: https://my.sandiego.edu/ and located under the Help Requests tab you will find “Safety Check” to enter your updated emergency contact information. 

Other important steps to prepare for an earthquake include:

• Visiting the San Diego County Office of Emergency Services website at: http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/oes/ for additional information on emergency preparedness and family disaster planning
• Visiting the California Earthquake Alliance - Drop, Cover, and Hold Instructions page at: https://www.earthquakecountry.org/step5/

These resources will help you prepare for an earthquake and what to do during and immediately after an earthquake.
