The University of San Diego and Major League Baseball’s San Diego Padres have entered into a collaborative partnership for 2020, which presents a number of visible opportunities. On Friday night, Feb. 21, one the partnership’s first will happen when the Toreros baseball team plays its opening game of the weekend’s Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament at USD’s Fowler Park.

The Toreros host Nebraska at 6 p.m. Friday and there will be some special Padres guests on hand. The Padres’ mascot, The Swingin' Friar, will be in attendance to say hello to fans and he is scheduled to race USD’s mascot, Diego Torero, between the third and fourth inning. Also, members of the Pad Squad will be at the game to provide additional spirit and swag.

Coreen Petti, USD’s associate vice president of university events and partnerships, successfully worked on getting the USD-Padres partnership done.

“USD and the San Diego Padres have come together in a meaningful, fully integrated partnership program in 2020 to capitalize on its strong brand alignment, like-minded commitment to the community and the consolidation of activities to better position both organizations to further leverage and maximize their unique assets,” Petti said.

Collaborative partnership benefits include: university students and employees receiving discounts on regular-season Padres game tickets via a special promotional code; multiple USD-associated Padres game nights with special merchandise and game experiences; a community engagement project; on-campus guest lectures by Padres leadership members; and Torero Treks — one this spring and one in fall — at Petco Park for students to learn about a vast number of career opportunities.

The culminating collaboration between the two is that USD’s 2020 Founders Gala, the university’s signature fundraising event to support student scholarships, will be held at Petco Park on Saturday, Nov. 7.
