'Christ: Life, Death, and Resurrection' Art Exhibit Highlights Prints & Pinot, Lecture/Reception Events

The College of Arts and Sciences, University Galleries and the University of San Diego Alumni Association co-hosted the fall semester's Prints and Pinot event on Thursday night in the Hoehn Family Galleries and Founders Hall Foyer.

The event provided alumni, faculty, staff and guests (age 21 and up) a prime opportunity to see the current exhibit, “Christ: Life, Death, and Resurrection,” a collection of more than 40 original drawings and prints by Italian Renaissance artists including Michelangelo.

Kate Dimitrova Dimitroff, PhD, an art history lecturer for USD’s Art, Architecture and Art History Department, provided attendees with historical perspectives about the Italian Renaissance art during a tour of the exhibit.

In addition to the exhibit, there was a printmaking demonstration by students in the Visual Arts program, an opportunity to both learn about and purchase copies of the USD English Department’s student creative writing publication The Alcala Review as well as a chance to spin a wheel and do a short poetry reading. Live music was provided both by a solo guitarist and the USD Chamber Music and Strings ensembles.

Pinot noir and pinot grigio wines and paired hors d’oeuvres were available for attendees. There was also a special take-home, 84-page Christ: Life, Death and Resurrection exhibit publication for paid guests.

Convivio Society Hosts Lecture, “Christ” Exhibit-Connected Event Oct. 19

A lecture given by 2006 School of Leadership and Education Sciences alumnus Kevin Petti, PhD, and a wine reception and private viewing of the University of San Diego-hosted “Christ: Life, Death, and Resurrection” art exhibit will take place on Saturday, Oct. 19.

The 6 p.m. lecture by Petti, titled, “Connecting Art, Anatomy, and Religion in the Italian Renaissance will take place in the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice Theatre. The wine reception and exhibit viewing of drawing and prints from the British Museum begins at 7:15 p.m. in the Hoehn Family Galleries Foyer in USD’s Founders Hall.

The cost is $25 per person for the lecture, wine reception and exhibit viewing.

Petti, who is a dual U.S. and Italian citizen, is a professor at San Diego Miramar College, an adjunct faculty member at San Diego State University and is the founder of Anatomia Italiana. His talk will examine the nexus between art and anatomy in Italy, how religious works were influenced by the scientific endeavors of the Renaissance Masters, and how this story is distinct to the Italian peninsula.

This evening event is hosted by the Convivio Society, which cultivates community and fellowship, advances Italian cultural identity, and fosters multi-cultural awareness in the arts and humanities through education, research, social enrichment and innovative programming.
