Football

Two weeks out from its season-opening game at Cal Poly, the USD football team hosted its annual tailgate and scrimmage at Torero Stadium on Aug. 17. Alumni, family, boosters and friends heard from head coach Dale Lindsey, enjoyed some food and drinks and then there was some football played.

A few players were rested, but wide receivers Michael Bandy, Alex Spandone and Christian Brown combined for four touchdowns — Brown had two — in the scrimmage.

The Toreros continue practices this week and next in preparation for the Mustangs and the rest of the teams on the 2019 schedule.

Men’s Basketball / Women’s Basketball

Fall sports season is gearing up to start at the University of San Diego, but the men and women’s basketball teams have already announced their full 2019-20 schedules (sans most game start times) that begin in November.

The men’s season begins at home Nov. 5 against UC Irvine while the women’s team, following a Nov. 6 home exhibition against Cal State San Bernardino, opens the regular season, also at home, Nov. 11 against Towson. West Coast Conference play begins Jan. 2 at Loyola Marymount for the men and Dec. 28 at Pepperdine for the women.

Highlights for the men include hosting San Diego State on Nov. 20, playing in the Boca Raton Beach Classic against Hofstra (Nov. 27 at USD), St. Bonaventure (Dec. 1 in Boca Raton, Fla.), and Holy Cross (Dec. 7 at USD) and one still to be determined opponent that USD will play Dec. 2 in Boca Raton. USD plays Stanford in the Al Attles Classic Dec. 21 at the Chase Center in San Francisco. In conference play, USD's annual home game against Gonzaga is on Jan. 9.

In all the men’s schedule features games against four teams who competed in the 2018-19 NCAA Tournament (Irvine, Washington, Saint Mary’s and Gonzaga) and two fellow NIT qualifiers (Hofstra and Colorado). See the complete schedule.

The women’s schedule is highlighted by hosting the San Diego Thanksgiving Tournament Nov. 29-30 with Texas Tech, Monmouth (N.J.) and Indiana’s Purdue-Fort Wayne in the field and a Dec. 11 game at San Diego State.

The women’s schedule features two NCAA Tournament teams from last year — West Coast Conference foes BYU and Gonzaga — and five WNIT qualifiers, including WCC’s Pepperdine, Pacific, Saint Mary’s and Loyola Marymount. Idaho is the other one. See the complete schedule.

While game times have not been announced, one particular interesting item is that the USD men and women’s teams will have four game days in which they play a WCC doubleheader in the JCP.
