USD Showcases New Technology that Goes Beyond the Classroom

University of San Diego professors can find out just how easy and useful new classroom technology can be at the 4th annual Faculty Technology Open House, an exhibition showcasing how students can learn online, anytime. The event will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday, February 12th at the University Center Forum C.


“This year we are trying to highlight student expectations,” said Shahra Meshkaty, senior director of Academic Technology Services at USD. “In this day and age of instant access, they want learning to accommodate their busy schedules.  This year’s theme, ‘Techie’s – Open 24 Hours’ is a reminder that learning can be served anytime and that students don’t stop needing services and resources when they leave the classroom,” she said.


At the exhibition, faculty will learn how to make materials available at any time of day; how to record and deliver audio and video online; how to conference with students from remote locations and how to use response systems to quickly gauge student answers or opinions or add comments to an electronic presentation.


A panel of faculty will share success stories about their experiences using technology in teaching and a panel of students will discuss their technology expectations and share what they find to be most helpful.


Mobile learning is now a reality at USD, with the new iTunes University and MySDMobile application available to students.  Eleven mobile applications allow campus users to track campus news, search for courses, and access the library catalog. Faculty can also learn how to share lectures on iTunes U.


Representatives from Tidebreak will demonstrate their collaborative products, TeamSpot and ClassSpot, which allow students to work together on one shared screen from their own laptop computers.


ERSI will present ArcGIS, software that allow users to create digital imagery for a wide variety of geographic and demographic data.


Other technologies highlighted at this year’s exhibition include the university’s learning management system, web conferencing applications, clickers and interactive classroom console.  Bibliography software, classroom capture technology and much more will also be shared.


In addition to those already mentioned WebCT/Blackboard, EndNote, Echo 360, SMART, Wimba, Apple, Microsoft, HP,Dell, AT&T, Verizon, CPS, and Adobe will also be on hand to demonstrate their products and services.
