In our hyper-competitive world of international business, building, managing and sustaining a global supply chain is critical. Regular supply chain issues must be addressed in innovative ways. There are a number activities companies should focus on in order to optimize their supply chains. These include properly controlling costs, mitigating supply chain risk and complexity, pursuing cross-functional alignment, implementing green practices, and attracting and retaining appropriate talent.

Although sound supply chain management practices are not always followed, crafting and executing a thoughtful supply chain strategy is critical - and the benefits are huge. A well-oiled supply chain can go a long way in enhancing global competitiveness and achieving higher profits. It also could also be the difference between success and failure.

Seminar Leader:

Joel Sutherland has over thirty years of experience as a supply chain professional, working for manufacturers, wholesale distributors, and third party service providers in various industries, including automotive, paper, pharmaceutical, and consumer packaged goods. Mr. Sutherland has worked and lived abroad, beginning with managing a 3PL in Germany for Sealed Services (now Maersk). In the late 1990s, Joel was hired by J.B. Hunt to develop and execute a vision for creating a transportation 3PL that would later become Transplace, which today manages more than $5 billion in freight. Wrapping up his industry career, Joel was President and Chief Operating Officer of Air-Road Express - utlimately selling the company in 2005.

Joel received his B.S. degree in Logisitcs from the University of Southern California, and an MBA from Pepperdine University. He has taught logistics at the University of Southern California, the University of San Diego, Lehigh Univiersy and at various overseas locations.

In 2011, Joel moved back to his home state of California and is now the Managing Director of the University of San Diego's Supply Chain Management Institute (SCMI). In this role, Joel is focused on increasing industry/university collaboration.
