Business Strategy for Innovation and Global Growth: The Case of CEMEX

Hector Medina will share with you the major decisions taken by CEMEX over a 20-year period in which the company was transformed from a local Mexican cement player to a global construction materials supplier. During this period, the company's sales and Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization (EBITDA) grew at a significant annual rate and operations expanded to more than 50 countries. Mr. Medina will highlight the major cultural changes that CEMEX underwent to support this growth, with innovation playing a fundamental role in the process.

Speaker Biography:

Mr. Medina joined CEMEX in 1988 and was responsible for the company's worldwide strategic planning and finance. In 2010 he retired, and he now serves as a board member for several public and private companies in Mexico, while actively pursuing a variety of other business and personal interests. Mr. Medina received his degree in Chemical Engineering from Tecnológico de Monterrey, followed by a MSc degree in Management from the University of Bradford Management Center in the U.K., and a M.S. degree from the Escuela de Organización Industrial in Spain.
