Shelley Yerger Hawkins, PhD, FNP-BC, GNP, FAANP is an Associate Professor of Nursing and Director of the Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner Program. Dr. Hawkins received her BSN, MSN, and PhD at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Additionally, she completed post-Master’s certificates as an FNP at the University of Virginia and a GNP at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Dr. Hawkins completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research is focused on using various telemedicine devices to improve the health of older adults and to deliver behavioral and clinical interventions for older adults with diabetes.
Prior to coming to USD, Dr. Hawkins has held nurse faculty positions at Yale University, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the University of Virginia, and Auburn University. Recently, she was employed in a corporate position with All About Advanced Health as Senior Director of Clinical Services, which resulted from her research.
Dr. Hawkins has extensive faculty and administrative experience in baccalaureate, Master’s, and post-Master’s programs with specialization in curriculum development in advanced practice nursing. She has written and been funded for several training grants to support student and faculty development in nurse practitioner education. Dr. Hawkins has presented and published extensively on various topics related to advanced practice nursing education and chronic illness prevention and management. She has maintained a part-time practice as a FNP/GNP throughout the last 15+ years in primary care rural settings and telemedicine, and is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
