Inspired by faith, informed by our core mission and values, and dedicated to the ongoing legacy of our founders, the University of San Diego's new strategic plan envisions a more distinctive identity among the most respected Catholic universities in the world.

Hello fellow Toreros.  I am very pleased to report that our Board of Trustees has approved a bold new strategic plan that has been informed and shaped by the many contributions of our faculty, staff, administrators, students, alumni and friends of USD. The plan, which is titled Envisioning 2024, looks forward to USD’s 75th anniversary and charts a course that builds upon our successes in recent years as we aspire to set the standard for a contemporary Catholic university confronting humanity’s urgent challenges.

The most fundamental element of our Envisioning 2024 strategic plan, of course, is student success.  This means helping our students to graduate with a global perspective as compassionate citizens and ethical leaders.  It means connecting them with opportunities in their respective fields of interest as they begin or advance their careers.  It also means providing our faculty with the tools and resources they need to empower and equip our students to live fulfilling lives and become responsible, global citizens.

This is the time for us to further advance our global initiatives, while recognizing that to be a great international university we must first be an anchor institution for our local community.  We are in an excellent position to accelerate access to our campus for prospective Toreros from around the world. As a contemporary Catholic university located near an international border, we have an opportunity to confront humanity’s urgent challenges, ranging from immigration and the environment, to the growth of the bio-tech sector and other industries that extend beyond the border.

Envisioning 2024 also calls for us to provide greater access to prospective students from underserved populations in our own backyard and to fully embrace the diversity of humanity on our campus. We have a Culture of Care at USD that calls upon us to be good stewards of God’s creation.  We have an obligation to elevate our engagement across our campus and into our San Diego communities and communities around the world.  As we share our talents and skills with others, we also listen and learn from the rich experiences of people from different backgrounds and life experiences than our own.

This plan takes these themes and shapes them into pathways that will set us on a course to become one of the greatest Catholic universities of the 21st century.  Envisioning 2024 is ambitious.  It promises a lot.  But it also asks something of all of us.  We are blessed with a stellar faculty, remarkable students, highly successful alumni and a dedicated team of administrators and staff who do great work to advance our mission. Rather than taking comfort in USD as a well-kept secret, let’s make no secret of the great work we do here.

I invite you to learn more about the vision, principles and pathways of the Envisioning 2024 strategic plan on this website.
