DPS Case #09-01093
November 8, 2009
On November 8, 2009 at approximately 12:13 p.m., the Department of Public Safety received a report (case #09-01093) of an individual brandishing a weapon near The Immaculata. Public Safety responded immediately to the location, located the individual in question, and determined that he had a pocket knife on his person. The individual was reported to have made threatening comments and threatening gestures with the pocket knife to two non-USD community members. Public Safety immediately placed the individual under arrest and identified him as Hector Beltran. SDPD was contacted and responded to the scene, assumed custody of Mr. Beltran and booked Mr. Beltran into jail.

At approximately 3:20 am on Thursday, October 22, 2009, two University of San Diego resident students observed a male individual walking down the southwest exterior stairs of the San Rafael residence hall. The male subject was described as a 19-20 year old Caucasian, approximately 6’ tall and of medium-muscular build. The subject was reported to be nude below the waist, and was wearing a white T-shirt with a circular logo.
USD Department of Public Safety was contacted by the reporting party approximately 10-20 minutes after the incident occurred. Public Safety officers responded but were unable to locate anyone in the area matching the description. The incident remains under investigation.

At approximately 1:02 am on Monday, 17 August 2009, Public Safety received a report from a resident student of an unknown subject that was peeping into a University Terrace Apartment. Public Safety arrived immediately and was able to locate the suspect who they observed looking through the window of the student’s apartment. Public Safety apprehended the suspect, who was identified as Solomon Shepherd. SDPD was contacted and they placed Mr. Shephard under arrest.

07/25/2009
On July 25, 2009 at approximately 0100hrs, a Public Safety Officer observed a nude male running towards the Manchester Village garage of building 2. The Public Safety Officer pursued the male into the garage and the male was last seen running east bound up the stairs between Manchester Village buildings 1 and 2. Additional Public Safety Officers arrived to assist, but were unable to locate the male.
At this time, we do not have any indication that the male entered a university residence hall or building.
The individual is described as a White male adult possibly between 25-30 years old, approximately 5’8” to 5’11”, short dark brown hair with a receding hair line, muscular build.

On July 4th, 2009 at approximately 11:52pm a resident of the University Terrace Apartments reported that unknown male was seen looking through her bathroom window (case 09-00619). The individual is described as a White male in his 20’s, approximately 5’8” with short black hair wearing a green jacket and black pants.

CAMPUS SAFETY ALERT
07/01/2009
At approximately 8:02 am on June 30, 2009, a non-student was contacted for abusing and being disruptive in a lounge in the Warren Hall School of Law that was reserved for students. Upon investigation, the individual, later identified as Melvin Marbrey, had been using the Student Lounge to cook his meals and watch TV. The subject initially complied with Public Safety when asked to leave the area, however he was later seen in the Legal Research Center.
Public Safety immediately responded and again admonished the subject for being on campus, and served him with a written No Trespass Order. SDPD was contacted to respond when the subject refused to comply with Public Safety’s requests. SDPD responded and assumed custody of Mr. Marbrey.

At approximately 7:54 pm on Saturday, June 06, the University of San Diego Department of Public Safety (DPS) received a report of a male subject who had allegedly exposed himself to a female while she was jogging westbound along Linda Vista Road west of the Main Entrance and east of the USD stairway located on Linda Vista. The individual, described as a black male, 5’10” and 180lbs with black hair and brown eyes, was contacted by Public Safety shortly after the incident was reported.
The San Diego Police Department was contacted and responded to the scene. SDPD placed the individual under arrest for indecent exposure and for failing to register as a felony sex offender. The individual, identified as Anthony Patton, is not permitted to be on USD property. Should you see Mr. Patton, do not attempt to contact him, and please call DPS immediately at 619-260-2222.

At approximately 4:55 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, Public Safety received a report of an unknown male subject using the women’s restroom on the second floor of the Legal Research Center. Public Safety officers responded immediately and found Scalfaro in the women’s restroom. Scalfaro was given a No Trespass Admonishment and escorted off campus.

At approximately 11:30 pm on Thursday, May 21, a University of San Diego resident student observed an individual look through her kitchen window while she was in a nearby room. The individual has been described as a Hispanic male with light skin and dark black hair, and was approximately 5’8” and 160lbs. The subject was last seen wearing a blue track jacket.
USD Department of Public Safety was contacted by the student immediately after the incident occurred. Public Safety officers responded but were unable to locate anyone matching the description. The incident remains under investigation.

At approximately 2:45 pm on Thursday, May 14, a University of San Diego resident student was approached by an unknown male subject outside of Copley Library and was subjected to an unwanted physical embrace. Yesterday, it was reported to Public Safety that the same male subject had previously approached and made inappropriate remarks to the resident student on May 8 near the Missions B area after exiting a white 4-door SUV.
The male subject is described as 20-25 years old, possibly of Middle Eastern descent, 5’8”-5’11” tall, 160-180 lbs, with short, thick brown hair and brown eyes, and unshaven. He was last seen wearing a pink shirt and pink striped linen shorts.

05/15/2009
At approximately 12:31am on Friday, May 15, a University of San Diego resident student reported that he was allegedly contacted earlier in the evening by two male individuals that were demanding the whereabouts of another resident student. The individuals have both been described as white males approximately 5’10” in height. One subject was wearing a gray Tshirt and had earrings, while the other subject was wearing a white Tshirt; both individuals were wearing shorts. A threatening statement was made by one of the individuals in reference to the student they were attempting to locate. The individuals were advised that the resident student was not present, and they left the area without incident. Public Safety officers and Residential Life Staff responded and checked the surrounding areas. The subjects were unable to be located. The incident remains under investigation.

This individual was contacted by Public Safety and arrested by SDPD on 05/12/2009 for suspected burglary of vehicles in the Alcala Vista Parking lot, and was found in possession of a window hammer (a burglary tool). At approximately 6:00pm on Monday, May 4, a commuter University of San Diego student witnessed a male subject exit a female restroom within the Legal Research Center. The suspect is described as a white male in his 30s, with shoulder-length, wavy brown hair, and was last seen wearing light blue jeans, a plain white T-shirt, and black sneaker-type shoes. The suspect was also seen carrying a black briefcase-type bag.
USD Department of Public Safety was contacted by the student on 05/07/09 at approximately 8:45am. The incident remains under investigation.

At approximately 4:22pm on Wednesday, April 29, a resident University of San Diego student observed a subject that appeared to be crouching in order to look under a San Miguel Hall shower stall. The individual has been described as fair-skinned, and left immediately after being verbally confronted by the student.
USD Department of Public Safety was contacted by the student immediately after the incident occurred. Public Safety officers responded but were unable to locate any persons of interest due to the limited description. The incident remains under investigation.

At approximately 9:22pm on Friday, April 3, a resident University of San Diego student witnessed a male subject look through her University Terrace Apartment closet window as she was in her closet. The suspect was only able to be observed through a 12” opening at the bottom of the window, and was last seen wearing a blue shirt and jeans.
USD Department of Public Safety was contacted by the student twenty minutes after the incident occurred. Public Safety officers immediately responded and checked the surrounding areas. The incident remains under investigation.

The suspect was described as a white male of average build in his late 20s/early 30s with dark hair, did not have facial hair, and was reported as having dark eyes and black-framed glasses with clear lenses. The suspect is assumed to be at least 6’0” to have been able to see through the bathroom window without assistance.

An unfortunate incident near USD serves as a reminder to please maintain your personal safety. At approximately 11:45pm on Friday, March 13, 2009, two individuals outside of the local nightclub, Brick By Brick, were shot and seriously wounded. While the victims were not associated with USD, the nightclub is a well-known location to many on campus and the proximity of this crime to the University is troubling. Police are still looking for the assailants.
The Department of Public Safety and the San Diego Police encourage all residents, including students, to join your local Neighborhood Watch program. Get involved and be an active part of the community.

ITS CELL PHONE/TEXTING SCAM ALERT

The ITS Help Desk and Public Safety have received reports of both calls and texts being made to personal cell phones by two different numbers, claiming to represent the "USD Credit Union". During these calls, your 16 digit credit card and other personal information are requested for verification. DO NOT provide any information to these fraudulent requests.
The two known numbers associated with these calls at the present time are: 866-384-5761 and 800-531-5675.

On January 26, 2009, three commuter student’s vehicles were reported burglarized and/or vandalized while parked on the B-1 level of the West Parking Structure. If you have any information regarding either of these incidents, please contact Public Safety at (619) 260-7777.

OFF-CAMPUS SAFETY ALERT
1/15/09
An unfortunate incident near USD serves as a reminder to please maintain your personal safety. In the early hours of Saturday, January 10, 2009, a patron of O’Connell’s Sport Bar was shot and killed following a fight in the street. While the victim was not associated with USD, the bar is a well-known location to many on campus and the proximity of this crime to the University is troubling. Police are still looking for the assailant.
In addition to this violent crime, KFMB-TV News 8 recently reported on rash of home burglaries in Mission Beach. Police encourage all residents, including students, to join the Neighborhood Watch program in Mission Beach. In addition to taking common safety measures around your home, your neighbor can be the eyes and ears that prevents you from being robbed while you’re at class or work. Get involved and be an active part of the community.

At approximately 8:00pm on Sunday, November 30, a resident University of San Diego student witnessed a male subject look through her University Terrace Apartment bathroom window as she was showering.
The suspect was reported as being a white male with dark hair, and was possibly standing on two adjacent metal pipes to reach the 6’5” height of the bathroom window, which was open. The suspect left the UTAs immediately after being verbally confronted by the student.

IMPORTANT UPDATE RE: CAMPUS CRIME ALERT ON 11/05/2008
At approximately 10:00pm on November 5, 2008, the suspect involved in the unauthorized entry of an apartment in Manchester Village (DPS case #08-01182) was positively identified and apprehended by Public Safety for questioning. Upon investigation it was determined that this individual, a non-student, is an acquaintance of a resident student currently residing in Manchester Village. It was determined that the individual was attempting to enter her apartment via a window but actually entered the wrong apartment. Public Safety released the individual after questioning pending SDPD’s involvement. All residents are again reminded to properly secure their windows and doors and not utilize windows as a means to gain access to their residence.

11/05/2008
DPS Case Number: 08-01182
At approximately 10:30pm on Monday, November 3, 2008, a resident University of San Diego student witnessed an unidentified man in her Manchester Village apartment. It is believed that the unidentified man gained access by removing a window screen of their ground-level apartment. This individual was described as having light-colored skin, wearing black sweatpants, a dark shirt and a black baseball cap. Once the suspect noticed the resident, he immediately exited through the front door of the apartment.
USD Department of Public Safety was contacted by the resident immediately following the incident. Officers responded to the scene and conducted a visual search of the area, which was found to be well-lit at the time due to an athletic event on the Manchester Village field. Surveillance video was also screened, though at this time, no one matching the suspect description has been located in the area.

Residents are reminded of the importance to keep windows secure and not leave doors propped open. Residents are also requested to verify that their windows can be properly secured. Additional window locks are available through Residential Life, and all residents are strongly encouraged to utilize these devices. Last night at approximately 8:52pm, a resident University of San Diego student witnessed a male subject masturbating outside of a Sports Center entry door.
The suspect was reported as being possibly of Middle Eastern descent, in his early-mid twenties, 5’7”-5’8” feet tall and of slim build. The suspect in last night’s incident closely resembles the description of the suspect in a similar incident last week, DPS Case #08-00969. Early this morning at approximately 12:34am, a resident University of San Diego student was approached and grabbed in an inappropriate manner by an unknown male in the Alcalá Vista courtyard area outside of Palomar Hall. The USD student also witnessed the suspect masturbating outside near a Palomar Hall stairwell.
The suspect was reported as being possibly of Middle Eastern descent, in his early-mid twenties, 5’6”-5’7” feet tall and of slim build. He was reported as wearing a ball cap, light colored T-shirt, a navy blue jacket and brown sandals.
The suspect followed the victim into the outside corridor adjacent to the student’s apartment.
USD department of Public Safety was contacted by the student shortly after the incident occurred. Public Safety officers immediately checked the surrounding areas. The incident remains under investigation.

DPS Case Number: 08-00785
Late last night and early this morning between the hours of 2230 and 0130, a resident University of San Diego student was awakened by two suspects attempting to remove a residence hall (Alcala Vista Apartment – Laguna Hall) window screen. The male suspect, who has been described as an Asian male in his twenties, was accompanied by an unidentified female, and both left the scene after being verbally warned by the USD student.
Also during this time frame, another resident USD student in a different resident apartment within the Laguna Apartment building was also awakened by an unknown male and female who had illegally entered his room through a window and turned on the lights. The suspects fled after noticing the room was occupied.
USD Department of Public Safety was contacted by one student several hours following the incident, and it is unknown at this time if the suspects are the same individuals in both incidents.

CRIME ALERT 12/19/2007
This morning at approximately 9:15, a University of San Diego student was approached by a stranger in the area of Mildred and Goshen Streets (near the University Terrace Apartments) who then made inappropriate comments and exposed himself to the student.
The suspect is described as a white male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and red shorts.
Immediately following the incident, the student notified USD’s department of Public Safety who immediately responded and who also contacted the San Diego Police Department. At this time, the suspect has not been apprehended.
As Public Safety and SDPD continue to search for the suspect, you are asked to report any suspicious activity to either Public Safety at 619-260-2222 or SDPD by calling 911.
