USD Veterans Center
The Veterans Center serves as the dedicated site for our student veterans and military-connected students to gather. It is responsible for the administration of all US Department of Veterans Affairs education benefits processing and is dedicated to making the educational experience second to none for our student Veterans and military family members attending USD on a GI Bill® allowance. The Veterans Center has places for meetings and study, a TV lounge for relaxing, and provides a break room area for student use. The center is managed by the Veteran Student Services Coordinator Derek Abbey, houses the VA Certifying Official Marvin Veneracion, and VA student workers. We are the central place for veteran's resources, involvement, networking and the Student Veterans Organization.

USD Yellow Ribbon Program scholarship
What is the Yellow Ribbon Program?
The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program (Yellow Ribbon Program) is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008, also known as the Post-9/11 GI Bill or Chapter 33. The Yellow Ribbon Program allows institutions of higher learning to enter into a voluntary agreement with the Department of Veterans Affairs to contribute funds to a veteran's unmet tuition and fee charges when their tuition and fees charges exceed the amount payable under Chapter 33. The program allows institutions to contribute an amount up to 50 percent of a veteran's unmet costs; the Department of Veterans Affairs will match the amount.
The Yellow Ribbon scholarship is being coordinated with other USD grants and scholarships by replacing those grants and scholarships up to the amount of the Yellow Ribbon scholarship. Since the VA matches USD Yellow Ribbon scholarships, this ensures the student receives the full potential VA match without reducing their total USD scholarship.
Only 100% maximum benefited rate under Chapter 33 is eligible for this funding. The Yellow Ribbon Program is not available for an active service member and spouse of an active service member.
For 2014-15 school year, University of San Diego is providing Yellow Ribbon scholarship in the amount of:
- $8,466 for undergraduate students
- $7,448 for graduate and doctoral students
USD Yellow Ribbon Program is awarded after Post-9/11 has all been used. The unmet tuition will then be split or divided into two awards USD YRP and VA matching of YRP. USD YRP must not go over above rates per academic year.
|Example||Fall 2014||Spring 2014|
|Tuition & Fees||$21,454/semester||$21,454/semester|
|VA YRP match||$609.49||$7,856.51|
How is the award posted on student accounts?
Financial Aid office will pre-post either VA Post 9/11 or USD Yellow Ribbon scholarship on student account at the beginning of each term. Other financial aid awards will be adjusted accordingly.
Note: Only Non-Title IV awards; ROTC, CALGRANT, employee tuition remission or discounts and or tuition based only scholarship/grants will be deducted first before Post 9/11 and YRP is applied to student's account.
