Assistant Professor of Marketing Justine Rapp and Ethnic Studies Professor Alberto López Pulido are recipients of two very prestigious awards, according to the Center for Educational Excellence and the Committee for Innovation in Community Engagement (CICE).
Rapp received the Innovation in Experiential Education (IEE) honor. Pulido was feted with the award for Innovation in Community Engagement (ICE).
Rapp captured the IEE award for two experiential learning projects she developed for her Digital Marketing and Social Media course. These projects provide the necessary link between consumer theory and business practice. Students work with non-profit organizations to create paid advertising campaigns that are run on Google throughout the semester. Students develop ad campaigns and make decisions based on data collected through the Google platform. They also work with six small businesses in the San Diego area in developing a digital marketing portfolio. Students are required to meet with clients one-on-one to gain a comprehensive understanding of their business offerings, subsequently developing a complete digital marketing package.
Pulido received the ICE honor for his work on the Chicano Park Mural Documentation Project. Pulido’s work documents each of the park’s murals by producing a comprehensive map with corresponding pages describing when the mural was created and a list of contributing artists. The project was innovative for its content but also in how students, faculty, and community were interwoven as stakeholders in the project. Check out a preview of the project.
Each award includes a $500 honorarium and an opportunity to present their work at a university-wide event this fall.
