Jesse Mills received his Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies from UC San Diego, his dissertation titled “Racing to Refuge: Ethnicity and Gendered Violence in San Diego’s Somali Refugee Community.” Professor Mills also holds Masters’ degrees in Ethnic Studies from UC San Diego, and in African American Studies from UCLA. Professor Mills’ research includes studies of early jazz in California, the politics of African American history preservation, and the ethnographic study of Somali refugee acculturation.
