Richard E. Custin exercises a practical approach to teaching based upon his experience as owner and manager of a law office and as a litigation attorney. As a member of the California Bar Association and The Association of Trial Lawyers of America he was appointed to a judge pro-tem assignment in Los Angeles, California. He served as a judicial law clerk in the Iowa District Court and was the recipient of the Hathaway Kemper Insurance Law Fellowship. Custin holds active bar memberships in California and Illinois. He is further admitted to practice law before the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, The United States Court of Federal Claims, The United States Court of Appeals For The Ninth Circuit and United States District Courts for the Northern District of Illinois, Central District of California and Southern District of California. 

His represented corporate clients have included Weyerhaeuser Company, Jenny Craig, Inc., Marriott International Inc., Nordstom, Prudential LMI Insurance Company, The Lumbermans Mutual Insurance Company, Crawford & Company, 20th Century Insurance Company and Pacific Rim Assurance Company.

Custin received his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the Drake University Law School, a LL.M. in Business & Corporate Law from the University of San Diego School of Law (Cum Laude) and a Master in Education degree from Carthage College.

Custin's teaching interests include, Business Law, The Legal Environment of Business, Labor & Employment Law and Business & Society. Custin served as an Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Business Administration Department at Carthage College, Kenosha, Wisconsin from 1990 to 2001. His speaking and research interests include employment law, workers compensation, medical malpractice, mediation and business law. Custin is presently representing injured Plaintiffs in medical malpractice claims under the Federal Tort Claims Act. He also has a general litigation practice as an attorney in San Diego, California. Custin is a certified mediator and a Board Member of the InterNational Academy of Dispute Resolution.
