Torero Experience: Merit Overnight Program

The Torero Experience: Merit Overnight Program is open only to admitted students who have been offered select merit scholarships. 

The Merit Overnight Program will take place Monday, March 16 - Tuesday, March 17, 2020. This event is designed to allow you to experience campus life firsthand. During your visit, you will be matched with a current USD student who will serve as your host.  

Please review this page in detail for important information on this event, including the registration process. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE TRAVEL PLANS until you have received a confirmation from us. Spaces are limited, so please register as soon as possible to reserve a spot. 

We are unable to entertain special overnight visit requests on dates other than our scheduled programs. If you are unable to join us for the Merit Overnight Program, we invite you to take part in Torero Visit Day or one of our Torero Experience: Torero for a Day programs.

Merit Overnight Program:

Day 1: Monday, March 16, 2020
2:00 p.m. Check-In at the Joan B. Kroc Institute of Peace and Justice Rotunda and Theatre.

2:45 p.m. - 5:15 p.m. Student Sessions: Ice Breaker, Resource Scavenger Hunt and Student Panel
3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Parent Sessions: Parent Panel and Q&A with the Office of Financial Aid and the Career Development Center
5:15 p.m. Meet your Student Host
5:45 p.m. Dinner and Free Time with your Host
8:00 p.m. Evening Social Events

Overnight Visit Details

An overnight visit is an in-depth, 24-hour stay with a current USD student host. You'll have the opportunity to attend classes, eat in the dining facilities and take part in social activities on campus. Meals will be provided for you, including: dinner on the day of your arrival, as well as breakfast and lunch on the following day.

You are expected to provide your own sleeping gear (i.e. sleeping bag, pillow, toiletries, etc.) for your stay in one of our residence halls. A limited quantity of sleeping bags and sleeping pads are available to rent for your visit. 


The fee for an overnight visit is $15.00, as well as an additional $15.00 for each guest who will be joining you at the Closing Luncheon. All fees are non-refundable.

Electronic payment is preferred and may be submitted during the registration process. Please have your credit card ready, as there is a time limit to complete the payment process during registration. If you are unable to complete payment, your registration will be canceled and you will not be able to re-register. If you experience this, email for assistance.



Register online via the MySanDiego portal. After logging in to the portal, visit the Admissions-Admitted tab and look for the "Spring Admitted Student Events" section. When registering, please note that you must use the email address you have on file with USD in order for your registration to be successful. (This will be the email address we have been using to contact you.) If you encounter problems when attempting to register, please: (1) make sure your pop-up blocker is disabled, (2) try another web browser and (3) clear your web browser cache. If you still cannot register, please give us a call so that we can assist.

You should have already received your MySanDiego username and password in an email sent to you by soon after you submitted your application. If you've misplaced your login credentials, please use the "Forgot Username/Password" link on the MySanDiego login screen, under "USD Applicants."

Once again, please do not make travel plans until you have received a confirmation from us. 

Note for Parents and Families

Parents are welcome to attend the Welcome Address and Parent Sessions on Thursday, as well as the Closing Luncheon on Friday. When not taking part in the Merit Overnight programming, we invite you to explore campus or our beautiful city on your own.

Planning Your Trip

If you will require hotel accommodations during your visit, we recommend that you consider booking with Bartell Hotels. Owned and operated by an USD alumnus, Bartell Hotels offers discounted room rates to friends and visitors of USD and donates 10% of all total room costs back to the University in support of student scholarships. To prepare for your trip to campus, please review our driving directions and campus map. Make sure to enter campus via the West Entrance and park in the West Marian Way Parking Structure, which will be just ahead on your left. Check-in will take place in the Joan B. Kroc Institute of Peace and Justice Rotunda and Theatre which is a short - but rather steep - walk up the hill from this structure. Should this walk pose any challenges to you or your family, trams are available to take you up the hill. Trams regularly pick up from the ground level of the parking structure.
