First-Generation College Student Experience

StudentsWelcome to the First-Generation (First-Gen) College Student Experience website where First-Generation students and their families can learn about what it means to be a First-Generation student at USD. In addition, this website is intended for any USD member to identify key resources to better support the growing First-Generation student population at USD.

Who is a First-Generation College Student?

The University of San Diego defines First-Generation students in the following way:

At the time you completed high school or high school equivalency, your custodial parent(s) or legal guardian(s) had not earned a bachelor's degree or higher.

This means you are the first to attend a 4-year college/university and obtain a bachelor's degree. Please know, we welcome anyone who self-identifies as a first-generation college student.

First Forward Institution

The University of Diego was recognized as a First Forward Institution by NASPA's Center for First-generation Student Success. First Forward is the nation's first recognition program acknowledging higher education institutions for their commitment to first-generation student success.  As a First Forward Institution, USD joins the inaugural cohort and community of professionals prepared to share evidence-based practices and resources, troubleshoot challenges, generate knowledge, and continue to advance the success of first-generation students across the country.
