Wine Classic Embodies Alumni, Assists Students

Monday, July 18, 2011

If you’re looking for an event that encompasses what the University of San Diego is about — and to enjoy it by drinking good wine and food — look no further than the third annual USD Wine Classic, taking place from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 24.

“The Wine Classic is a great example of the passion that USD alumni have for this school,” USD Alumni Relations Director Charles Bass said. “This event was created by alumni, involves USD parents and alumni from the wine industry, brings together the USD community and raises funds for student scholarships. It’s a chance for hundreds of alumni, family and friends to have fun and support a great cause.”

Nearly 30 wineries, each with a USD family attachment — owned or managed by alumni, parents and friends — will be represented at Sunday’s event, which is being held at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice’s Garden of the Sea, an intimate setting that offers views of Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean. More than 50 wines throughout California, including many from Napa Valley, and a few from Mexico will be available for sampling.

The wines are accompanied by gourmet-paired food and the atmosphere is complemented by live music, a silent auction with many wine-related prizes and a chance for many attendees to reconnect with classmates and network with fellow USD alumni. Tickets are going quickly, but there are still some available for $75 per person. Proceeds go to the USD Alumni Association Scholarship Fund to benefit current students, of which 68 percent of all USD undergraduates receive some form of financial aid.

Ninety minutes prior to the start of the Wine Classic, winemaker Christopher Silva from St. Francis Winery will conduct Zintastic!, a St. Francis “Old Vines” Zinfandel Component Blending Seminar. Participants will learn more about the art of winemaking during this separately ticketed event that runs from 12:30 to 1:45 in the IPJ. A very limited number of tickets, $50 each, remained as of July 18.
