The Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering (SMSE) at the University of San Diego (USD) invites applications for faculty that can help the school develop stronger leadership and teaching capacity in artificial intelligence (AI) and/or data science. We hope to hire, at minimum, one senior faculty member and several early career faculty members across SMSE to teach and/or design courses in AI/data science which can be in the context of any SMSE undergraduate department. As related to the The Integrated Engineering Department, we seek faculty members with expertise in AI/data science who could also teach courses within our program’s concentration areas of biomedical engineering, sustainability or the law.

The Integrated Engineering Department, founded in 2016, has developed a cross-disciplinary curriculum that infuses themes of social justice and sustainability into engineering. Integrated Engineering helps students who want to tackle the world’s most complicated interdisciplinary problems to develop a sociotechnical mindset for designing a sustainable future. The curriculum consists of two parts: 1) a broad technical foundation to prepare students for a range of engineering professions and 2) a concentration that will give students subject matter expertise in a particular area. All Integrated Engineering students must choose a concentration as a part of the major. Concentrations currently include sustainability, biomedical engineering, embedded software, engineering and the law, and an individual plan of study. Successful candidates to the Integrated Engineering department should hold a PhD in any field of engineering (including engineering education).

The Integrated Engineering Department seeks faculty who enjoy teaching undergraduate students within a liberal arts institution and who display a strong commitment to collaboration and interdisciplinarity, value both teaching and scholarship in service to the greater good, are comfortable working across engineering disciplines, and are interested in reimagining engineering education to address issues of social justice. Faculty joining the department should expect to teach in the first-year design sequence or capstone design, teach major-specific (GENG prefix) courses, and/or develop and teach elective courses for one (or more) concentration area(s). The ability to connect scholarly interests to issues facing society is valued. Applicants to the AI/ Data Science faculty position who are interested in being housed in Integrated Engineering should have expertise in considering the social and/or environmental impacts of artificial intelligence as well as in either: biomedical engineering, environmental sustainability or the law.
