Looking for a challenge that takes you beyond textbook theory and puts your skills to the test? Look no further than Torero Racing. As a team member of Baja SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) at the University of San Diego, you will get the hands-on opportunity to design, fabricate, test and race your very own creation — competing on USD's Torero Racing team against colleges and universities around the world while industry partners spectate.
SAE Collegiate Design Series
Do you have what it takes?
Regional competitions take students beyond the classroom and test each team's vehicle design to the breaking point.
Design
Utilizing mainly Solidworks and CAD while following the SAE rule book, students will design components, analyze weight, perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA), determine interferences and fully assemble a 4WD single seat off-road vehicle capable of tackling extreme off road conditions.
Fabrication
Utilizing welders, lathes, mills, CNC machines, tubing benders, sheet metal shears and various power and hand tools, you will now bring your designs to life. Teams dedicate well over six hours a week as your buggy takes shape. Mastery of time management and coordination are vital to the success of this stage.
Testing
Time to check your safety devices, validate all your calculations and assumptions and put the buggy through its paces. In the upcoming competition your vehicle will be tested for braking, acceleration, suspension/traction and maneuvering/handling. Your vehicle will also be judged on how well you optimized the 10-horsepower and 14.5-foot pounds of torque available from the Briggs and Stratton Vanguard-19 engine as it screams to 3,800 RPM during either a sled pull or a hill climb event. If your testing isn't on track, your chances of being competitive will be severely diminished.
Repairs | Upgrades | Finish Work
Depending on your testing results, the team may find themselves having to make repairs or even design changes/upgrades to get ready for competition. If you are on track, all that is left is prepping the buggy for competition.
Competition Time
Business presentation complete? Cost report complete? Vehicle ready to compete? The next four days are the most exhilarating and likely exhausting time of your life.
The Event
Competition is not for the faint of heart
