Spencer McDonald Scholarship in Computer Science and International Study Abroad

The University of San Diego's first ever named computer science scholarship

The Spencer McDonald Scholarship in Computer Science and International Study Abroad, made possible through the generosity of Kirby and Diane McDonald and named after their grandson, Spencer ’18 (CS), supports computer science majors with financial need, up to $10,000 total per year, wishing to study abroad.

While studying at USD, Spencer describes his study abroad experience in China as life-changing and wanted to help provide that opportunity for those who might not otherwise be able to have such an experience. He stated, “One of my highlights at USD was taking Dr. Jiang's data science study abroad course in China. On top of learning about data science, we were able to learn so much about China’s unique culture, customs, and lifestyle from a professor who grew up there. The trip only lasted three weeks, but afterwards it felt like everyone in our group had been friends for years. I encourage everyone who has the opportunity to study abroad to take it so they can have similar experiences.”
