Faculty Mentoring in CAS
The College provides guidelines for departments to support new pre-tenured faculty on the tenure track. In their first year, faculty are assigned a department mentor and as they progress toward tenure, they may be assigned an external (to the department) mentor to support their career goals. Hosted by the associate dean for faculty, new faculty enjoy community building and topical discussion twice each semester.
The associate dean for faculty hosts lunches throughout the first year with each cohort to build community and offer guidance on College-specific issues such as teaching expectations, student advising and connect faculty to available resources.
Each new tenure-track faculty is assigned a department mentor who is expected to engage and connect with the new faculty member offering advice and access to the community. Some faculty benefit from external mentors who share specific expertise outside of their home department.
The associate dean for faculty organizes lunch workshops for faculty preparing materials for promotion to professor. Faculty from across the College connect with each other to talk through questions and prioritize career choices for successful bids for promotion. Associate professors can request a College mentor from outside their department to support the process of promotion.
Departments are expected to adhere to the College’s minimum expectations for classroom peer observations to provide opportunities for pedagogical development for instructors. Faculty are also connected to resources through the Center for Educational Excellence.
