About Language Placement Exams

USD students who plan to continue studying a language to fulfill their Second Language Core competency requirement must take a language placement exam. Students will not be able to register for a language class until USD has placement results.

Language placement exams are unrelated to Language Competency Exams. Language placement exam results do not contribute in any way to "testing out" of the Core Curriculum requirement in language.

Students who have requested a Waiver of Placement should not take a language placement exam.

Taking a Language Placement Exam

A language placement exam is a diagnostic tool. It is not an "achievement" exam, so students should not prepare for it. Each student should perform their best without using dictionaries, friends or other assistance.

A language placement exam cannot be taken more than once per academic year.

Test Results

It may take five business days for your test to be reviewed by the Director of Placement and for the results to be updated. Registration for an appropriate language class cannot take place until this process is complete.
