About the Internship
The USD-Scripps Mercy Trauma Surgery Internship is a unique program for selected USD pre-medical students to participate in clinical rotations with trauma surgeons and staff. The internship allows students to better understand and experience the psychosocial elements of medicine. Students will have the opportunity to shadow and engage with a team of trauma surgeons and emergency medicine physicians throughout the internship.
This is a 1-unit pass-fail only course involving fieldwork under the supervision of the pre-health director, instructor and the trauma surgery medical staff at Scripps Hospital.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Observe the practice of trauma medicine through in-person observations of clinical rotations.
- Gain a better understanding of the psychosocial elements of medicine.
- Practice writing a self-reflection about internship experience.
Course Credit and Requirements
Students will receive 1 unit of biomedical ethics credit for completing the internship.
Course requirements include clinical hours (2 shifts a month), attending a weekly class and submitting a 5-page written reflection paper addressing what you learned about trauma medicine and its psychosocial components.
Eligibility and Application
Pre-requisites: Completion of Chem 331 or current enrollment
Additional Eligibility Requirements:
- Current USD full-time student
- Minimum 3.2 USD GPA
- High level of maturity
- Pre-medical third-year and fourth-year students only (based on expected graduation date, not units completed)
