What is a Pre-Health Peer Mentor?
Pre-health Peer Mentors are USD students that are trained to mentor and provide advising support to first year pre-health students. Mentors create a trusting and helpful relationship, which will assist incoming pre-health students with the challenges associated with the beginning year of college.
Peer Mentor Roles and Responsibilities
- Provide guidance and advising to first year students.
- Share insights into your experience as a college student.
- Encourage students to explore and reflect career decisions.
- Serve as a role model and a positive source of support to the mentee.
- Serve in an advisory role to the Pre-Health Advising Office.

The application opens at the beginning of the fall semester. Accepted students will participate in a training.

To be eligible, students must be sophomore standing or higher, have a 3.2 minimum GPA and a pre-health interest.
After the Pre-health Orientation, each mentor is matched with 5 mentees who have a similar pre-health interest. Mentors meet with their mentees throughout the fall semester to provide advising and support. In the spring semester, mentors participate in a leadership development series with an aim of gaining self awareness in preparation for graduate school admissions.
Mentors are expected to commit to one full academic year. Beyond that, mentors are given the option to continue.
