Leadership Development for Chairs

In the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), we bring our leaders together for workshops, conversations and community building. In collaboration with the dean, the associate dean for faculty leads these efforts and organizes leaders retreats at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.

Leaders Retreats

Leaders retreats take place in August and January, and respond to national trends in higher-education, university-wide initiatives or topics relevant to the College of Arts and Sciences. Topics including, “Building Your Interdisciplinary Program,” “Teaching Gen Z” and “Academic Leadership.”

Chair Discussion Groups

Chair discussion groups are opportunities to talk through challenges facing chairs across CAS. Hosted by the associate dean for faculty, example topics include “managing conflict,” “writing department handbooks” and “managing workload as chair.”

Chair Evaluations

Department chairs participate in an evaluation in their second year as chair and receive feedback from faculty, staff and the dean. The purpose of the review is to provide a professional development opportunity for the chair, as well as allowing faculty to share their perspectives about the chair’s performance and the direction of the department directly with the dean.
