David Ortiz-Weissberg, PhD, is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Comparative Anatomy and Biomechanics lab of Dr. Nicole Danos. A native of Orange, California, Dr. Ortiz returned to the west coast after completing both a bachelor's and a master's degree at the University of Pittsburgh.
His professional journey includes clinical experience as an orthotics resident, providing a unique perspective on human movement and assistive technology. This clinical foundation led him to pursue a doctorate in biokinesiology at the University of Southern California, where he refined his expertise in the mechanics of biological systems with a focus on Achilles tendinopathy in humans.
While many factors drive human movement, muscle-tendon units are ultimately responsible for movement. Disorders affecting muscle-tendon units can therefore impact typical movement patterns, affecting participation in athletic and daily living activities. My desired career trajectory is to continue my scholarly pursuits and develop a research program that shows how the sensory and motor systems adapt to muscle-tendon unit injury and pathology. The resulting knowledge will optimize prevention, diagnosis and treatment, thus enhancing quality-of-life and reducing healthcare costs.
