The following information is for scholarships that apply for short-term undergraduate study abroad programs.
International Center Need-Based Scholarship
Need-based scholarships are available for all International Center run undergraduate study abroad courses during the Intersession, Summer and Second Year Experience (SYE) sessions. All students who meet the below eligibility requirements are automatically considered for these scholarships. No formal applications are required.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a USD student
- Completed the FAFSA application and all supplemental forms through the Office of Financial Aid
- Opened a study abroad application before the original application deadline (see below dates).
- Must have been accepted to an International Center Faculty-Led Intersession, Second Year Experience, or Summer program AND attend the program.
- Scholarships can only be used towards tuition - students receiving other tuition benefits (ex. VA benefits, tuition remission, etc.) should contact the International Center to confirm eligibility to benefit from this award.
Scholarship Details
- The Office of Financial Aid determines a student's eligibility. Recipients are considered to have a high level of financial need and are typically Pell Grant recipients.
- All scholarships will be directly posted to the student’s account 10 day prior to the start of their study abroad program. No cash or checks will be given.
- Awards amounts are typically 40% of the tuition and fees charged by the International Center.
- All students who receive an award will be asked to submit one photo with accompanying quote from their travels abroad to Kanani Meheula at ckmeheula@sandiego.edu.
- If a student withdraws from a program for which they've received a scholarship, the award will no longer be valid and cannot be used to cover late withdraw fees.
Notification Details
- Students will be notified on a rolling basis, dependent upon when they opened their application.

The USD International Center is pleased to offer two Study Abroad Merit Scholarships: The Study Abroad Ink & Insight Award and The Study Abroad Intentional Travelers Award.
Scholarships range from $400 to $800. Merit scholarships can only be applied to tuition and application fees, not program fees. Students with tuition benefits (such as tuition remission or military benefits) can receive a maximum scholarship of $250.
Undergraduate students can only apply to one of the two following scholarships:
Ink & Insight Award
This scholarship is for students interested in social media content creation and meaningful reflection. Students will be required to create daily journal entries that share insight on their time abroad while also creating content that shares the educational experience. Students will be expected to post publicly on their own instagram accounts throughout their faculty-led program.
Intentional Travelers Award
This scholarship is designed to encourage students to think critically about the spaces and communities they will be visiting by conducting research beforehand and exploring the locations during their time abroad. Students will submit a pitch deck to showcase their research and will be tasked with providing evidence of visiting said location upon their return from abroad.Application and Award Requirements
- Read the instructions thoroughly and complete the application form
- Complete the requirements specific to each scholarship - before, during, and after the program
- The Ink & Insight Award requires diligent journal entries and bi-weekly social media posts
- The Intentional Travelers Award requires prior research, a submitted pitch deck, and evidence of visitation upon returning from abroad
Eligibility
- Students must select one of two merit scholarship options and complete the application in full
- Students must be a current USD undergraduate student
- Students must be enrolled and attend a faculty-led program (*Scholarships will NOT be applied to any cancellation fees).
- Students are required to fulfill all obligations associated with their awarded scholarship. Failure to comply will result in the scholarship being revoked, and the student will be responsible for paying the remaining balance on their student account.

Chapman Family Foundation Need-Based Scholarship for International Study Abroad (Intersession Only)
The Chapman Family Foundation Need-Based Scholarship for International Study Abroad is made possible by the generosity of the Chapman Family Foundation and supports USD students in the College of Arts and Sciences with financial need who otherwise may not have the opportunity to study abroad.
Scholarships are meant to reduce out-of-pocket expenses and can be used for the following expenses while studying abroad on one of USD's short-term international programs (Intersession term only):
- Application fees and program fees (*Scholarships cannot be used to cover cancellation fees)
- Any scholarship funds remaining (after program fees on the student account are covered) can be used for travel/meal/personal expenses associated with study abroad
- Students who cancel their enrollment or do not participate in the program abroad must return any and all scholarship funds that have been disbursed. The student will reimburse USD for the full amount of the scholarship.
- These awards are currently available for Intersession only (applications available late summer).

Note: Failure to accept the scholarship by the deadline will result in forfeiture of the scholarship and the funds will be offered to a student on the alternate list.
Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- USD student with active short-term study abroad application
- Declared and made progress towards a major or graduate program in the College of Arts and Sciences. SYE applicants may be undeclared.
- Demonstrate financial need (as determined by USD's Office of Financial Aid) and in good standing with Student Accounts.
- Priority will be given to first-generation college students and those with limited international experience.
- Previous recipients of a Chapman Family Foundation Scholarship for International Study Abroad are not eligible to reapply.
Post-Program Requirements
All recipients of the Chapman Family Foundation Need-Based Scholarship for International Study Abroad are required to submit a written reflection on their study abroad experience once they complete the program.
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship - The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. The Spencer McDonald Scholarship in Computer Science and International Study Abroad, made possible through the generosity of Kirby and Diane McDonald and named after their grandson, Spencer (CS ’19), supports computer science majors with financial need wishing to study abroad.

- Declared USD computer science major
- Have demonstrated financial need (as designated by the Office of Financial Aid)
- Meet all study abroad eligibility requirements & complete all study abroad application requirements
- Attend a short-term or semester program abroad

Fund for Education Abroad - FEA was created in order to open doors for deserving education abroad students. Starting with the 2011-2012 academic year, FEA will award funds for students planning to study abroad on any academically rigorous program. FEA scholarships are intended to meet the financial needs of students who might not be eligible for government grants or existing funds limited to specific programs or groups of students.
