Please note, the Student Health Center (SHC) does not manage health insurance

All USD students are required to have health insurance.

The Student Health Center (SHC) is only contracted with Aetna Student Health Insurance through Gallagher Insurance. Eligibility of coverage through Aetna Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) must be verified at the time of service. A billing summary with payment capability will be sent to your MyWellness Portal following your visit. Upon your assessment with a provider, you may be referred to other healthcare providers for additional care not offered by the SHC. All charges for services provided outside of the SHC, such as emergency or urgent care, referred specialist, radiology imaging, and outside lab testing are the responsibility of the student. Please check with your medical insurance provider to ascertain to costs associated with third-party services.

All currently registered students who have paid the Student Wellness Fee are eligible for services. Please note the Student Wellness Fee is not insurance and is different from the USD Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).

Although the SHC does not accept private insurance, students with private insurance can still be seen at the SHC. A detailed list of costs can be viewed prior to your visit.

  • Refer to the SHIP Benefits and Features page to view coverage dates and premiums.
  • The SHC bills SHIP provided by Aetna on behalf of students who purchased the policy through the University.
  • Students who are seen at the Student Health Center can receive a referral to reduce out-of-pocket costs and have their in-network deductible waived.
  • A portion of the payment may be collected at the time of visit based on your plan's policy.
  • Aetna determines your responsibility for co-payments, co-insurance, deductibles, and full cost for non-covered services.
  • Should you owe a balance after insurance processing, you will receive a billing statement. Insurance processing generally takes 30-60 days, but in some instances can exceed 90 days or more.
  • A detailed list of costs can be reviewed prior to your visit.
