Student Health Insurance Requirement

All USD full-time Undergraduate, Graduate, and Law students are required to have health insurance. At the beginning of every academic year, students need to decide to enroll in or waive the USD Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). This requirement ensures that students in need of health and/or mental health care beyond the scope of services provided by USD Student Wellness Services can access the appropriate care and resources in the community.

COVID-19 Health Insurance Updates

As of March 14, 2020, referrals are not needed for in-network providers at this time for students currently enrolled in the USD Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). The $300 deductible will be waived without a referral from USD.

Recent Loss of Coverage and Qualifying Events

Qualifying events can include:

  • Reaching the age limit of another health insurance plan
  • Loss of health insurance through a marriage or divorce
  • Involuntary loss of coverage from another health insurance plan

If you have recently experienced a qualifying event, please review the options available to you:

Petition to Add

Students who initially waived the USD SHIP may be able to Petition to Add coverage if they experience a qualifying event. To be eligible students must currently be enrolled in full-time units.
