Shepard Fairey and Class Politics

Shepard Fairey is a graphic artist and activist who plays an active role in the Street Art movement. Occupy Protester illustrated the cover of TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year edition and became a symbol of all the protest movements in 2011. Granting the image of the person wearing a scarf around the lower half of their face may suggest something different after the COVID-19 pandemic, the “99%” symbol in the lower-left corner suggests that the person is a protester from the Occupy Wall Street movement. Nevertheless, Fairey made a point to ensure that the defiant gaze of the protester represents the identities of all the idealists and protesters he commends.
