Diego Romero and American-Indian Identity

Romero was born in 1964 in Berkley, CA to a Cochiti father and a non-Native mother. As a potter and printmaker he creates works that explore Native American heritage to interpret contemporary issues in the pueblo reality. His narrative style fuses traditional materials and ancient techniques from Mimbres, Anasazi and Greek pottery with the characteristic imagery of Pop Art. Romero studied at the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, NM and received an MFA from University of California, Los Angeles. His lives and works in Santa Fe, NM as his work is collected and exhibited across the United States and Europe.

Romero nació en 1964 en Berkeley, California, hijo de un padre Cochiti y una madre no nativa. Como alfarero y grabador, crea obras que exploran su herencia indígena para interpretar problemas contemporáneos en la realidad del pueblo. Su estilo narrativo fusiona materiales tradicionales y técnicas antiguas de cerámica mimbres, anasazi y griega con las imágenes características del arte Pop. Romero estudió en el Instituto de Arte Indígena Americano en Santa Fe, NM y recibió un MFA de la Universidad de California, Los Ángeles.
