Annual Angelus Sacred Music Concert for Lent
We will perform three exquisite sacred Cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach, bringing together a tightly-knit ensemble of vocal soloists and the Bay Area's Jubilate period-instrument orchestra featuring Baroque strings, oboe, oboe d'amore, taille, caccia, flute, recorder, bassoon, organ and harpsichord. Once again, I will direct as well as moderate the concert with commentary on the music.
While Cantatas 146, 68, and 96 reflect on the subjects of Lent, on sorrow, suffering, and death, they ultimately come to ask: "Death, where is thou sting?" For Bach, the Passion of Christ is the pathway to Easter's Redemption. During the course of each cantata, the focus shifts away from the sorrows of the human condition to the sublime promise of faith.
You are invited to join us for some of Bach's most moving, both somber and jubilant, fabulous musical inventions for voices and instruments.
