Adult Gerontology and Family Nurse Practitioner Dual Specialty Track

The Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner dual specialty track at the University of San Diego Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science prepares advanced practice nurses to provide comprehensive, lifespan-focused primary care. This integrated program is designed for nurses who seek dual preparation in family practice and adult gerontology, equipping graduates to care for patients from young adulthood through older age in a wide range of clinical settings. Through advanced coursework, immersive clinical experiences, and dedicated faculty mentorship, students strengthen their diagnostic reasoning, clinical decision-making, and leadership capabilities grounded in evidence-based practice. Graduates are eligible to pursue national certification as both an Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner and a Family Nurse Practitioner, expanding their scope of practice, professional flexibility, and ability to improve health outcomes across complex healthcare systems.

Program Outcomes

Graduates of the Adult Gerontology and Family Nurse Practitioner dual specialty track will be able to:

Provide comprehensive primary care across the lifespan, from birth through older adulthood.
Perform advanced health assessments, formulate differential diagnoses, and manage acute and chronic conditions in diverse populations.
Integrate advanced pathophysiology, pharmacology, and diagnostic reasoning into safe and effective nurse practitioner practice.
Deliver evidence-based, person-centered care that promotes prevention, wellness, and management of complex health needs.
Lead quality improvement and population-focused strategies that advance health equity and improve outcomes in primary care settings.
Collaborate within interprofessional teams to coordinate care and optimize patient and system-level outcomes.
Demonstrate ethical leadership, professional accountability, and readiness for national certification as both an Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Certification Eligibility

Graduates of the Adult Gerontology and Family Nurse Practitioner dual specialty track are eligible to sit for national certification as:

Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, Board Certified (AGPCNP-BC) through the American Nurses Credentialing Center
Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (A-GNP) through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board
Family Nurse Practitioner, Board Certified (FNP-BC) through the American Nurses Credentialing Center
Family Nurse Practitioner, Certified (FNP-C) through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board

Graduates meet educational requirements for nurse practitioner licensure in California and are prepared to pursue dual board certification in both specialty areas.
