Financial Aid

USD School of Law administers a variety of federal, state and institutional programs. These include Federal Stafford loans, Graduate PLUS Loans, private loans and Federal Work Study employment programs. If you anticipate needing student loans for the Fall term, but have not yet applied, or have not yet received an offer of financial assistance, please contact the Financial Aid Office via email at lawaid@sandiego.edu, or by phone at (619) 260-4570 as soon as possible.

Your Spring schedule will be determined for you, as you do not yet have access to online registration. Please look for your schedule in MySanDiego on Wednesday, November 22, 2023.

NOTE: We cannot process the registration of anyone on whom the Office of Student Accounts has placed a financial hold. Please make sure your account is in balance by:

  1. Logging in to MySanDiego,
  2. Navigating to the "Law Student" page, and
  3. Scrolling down to the "Registration Tools" channel (middle column) and clicking on "Registration Status" to see if there are any holds on your account.

Registration is not complete until tuition is cleared in Student Accounts. Registrations completed after the payment deadline will incur a $150 late fee. The payment deadline for all students is 5 p.m. on Friday, January 5, 2024.

Continuing Students

Registration for all continuing law students has been scheduled as follows:

  • Friday, March 24, 2023 at 7 a.m.
    • All JD students who will be in the part-time program
  • Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at 7 a.m.
    • All rising 3L JD students who will be in the full-time program
  • Thursday, March 30, 2023 at 7 a.m.
    • All rising 2L JD students who will be in the full-time program
  • Monday, April 3, 2023 at 7 a.m.
    • All LLM and MSLS students

Students should log into MySanDiego no later than 6:45 a.m. Registration begins promptly at 7 a.m.

Online registration for Fall 2023 courses will be unavailable between Wednesday, April 26 at 11:59 p.m. and Monday, May 15 at 12:01 a.m. to observe the Spring 2023 final exam period.

  • View the Course Schedule to see all the necessary course information. 
  • Make special note of the "CRN" number. This is the Course Reference Number. This is the code you will use to register online for courses.
  • Online registration occurs in  MySanDiego (BANNER).
    1. Navigate to the"Law Student" page
    2. Under "Registration Tools" select "New Add/Drop Registration"
  • Technical Support. For support regarding registration please contact the ITS Help Desk via email at  help@sandiego.edu or by phone at (619) 260–7900.
  • Check your USD email account frequently if you are on a wait list so that you do not run the risk of missing your 24-hour email notification when a seat becomes available. The moment a student drops, a space opens for another student and everyone else moves up on the wait list. If you drop in error, your only option is to add yourself to the end of the wait list, if the wait list is still open.

    • All 2L JD students in the Full-Time Program
  • Monday, October 30, 2023 at 7 a.m.
    • All LLM students
    • All MS in Legal Studies students
    • All visiting students

Students should log into MySanDiego no later than 6:45 a.m. Registration begins promptly at 7 a.m. Registration will occur on a first-come, first-served basis on the above dates and times for each appropriate group of students.

Online registration for Spring 2024 courses will be unavailable between Friday, December 1 at 11:59 p.m. and Monday, December 18 at 12:01 a.m. to observe the Fall 2023 final exam period.

Please be sure to review the Rules Governing Course Registration and the rules that apply to JD students who wish to take LLMT courses.

First-Year Law Students

Your Spring schedule will be determined for you, as you do not yet have access to online registration. Please look for your Spring schedule in MySanDiego on Wednesday, November 22, 2023.

  • Online registration occurs in MySanDiego (BANNER).
    1. Navigate to the"Law Student" page
    2. Under "Registration Tools" select "Look Up Classes". Make special note of the "CRN" number - this is the code you will use to register online for courses.
  • Registration Errors appear near the bottom of the screen. You will have to scroll down the screen to see them.
  • Technical Support. For support regarding registration please contact the ITS Help Desk via email at help@sandiego.edu, or by phone at (619) 260–7900.
  • Check your USD email account frequently if you are on a waitlist so that you do not run the risk of missing your 24-hour email notification when a seat becomes available. Notification messages are only sent to your USD email account (name@sandiego.edu). Use extra caution when dropping classes with wait lists. The moment you drop, a space opens for another student and everyone else moves up on the wait list. USD Law—Summer San Diego

Summer Web Registration for San Diego courses will occur through MySanDiego on a first come, first served basis beginning on Tuesday, February 28, 2023.

  • Web Registration for Summer courses will be unavailable between Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at 12 a.m. and Sunday, May 14, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. to observe the Spring 2023 final exam period.

LLM and MSLS students only: All LLM and MSLS students must meet with the Office of Graduate and International Programs prior to registering for classes. Please contact Graduate and International Programs at (619) 260-7584 or lawgradprograms@sandiego.edu to schedule an appointment.

USD Law - Summer Externships

Field Placement Program externships for 1-6 academic credits (enrollment for additional credits permitted in exceptional cases subject to approval from supervising faculty) will be available at various starting and stopping dates during the summer. Students interested in summer externships should refer to the Field Placement site for detailed information.  Contact the Career and Professional Development Office at lawcareers@sandiego.edu with any questions. 

USD Law—Legal Clinic Internships

Internships for 1-4 credits are available during the summer. Students interested should refer to the Legal Clinic Application site for detailed application information. Contact (619) 260-7640 or Eric Austin with any questions. 

USD Law—Summer Study Abroad

To register for a Summer Study Abroad course, you must first apply to the Summer Study Abroad program of your choice. If admitted to the program, you will then be automatically registered for your selected courses. Please contact Graduate and International Programs at (619) 260-7584 or lawabroad@sandiego.edu with questions.

Tuition Payment

The full tuition balance or appropriate financial aid documentation is due at the Office of Student Accounts by the Friday before the first day of the summer session. Payments must be received (not just postmarked) by the deadline. Failure to complete this step by the deadline will result in a $150.00 late registration fee.

You are responsible for being familiar with the steps below and the information contained in each of the links.

Step 1: Develop an Ideal Schedule

Use the class schedules web page and the course descriptions web page to develop your ideal spring schedule. Keep in mind the rules governing course reservation while developing your schedule. Be sure to also get approval for clinical classes, judicial internships, Independent Supervised Research, and Moot Court or Mock Trial.

JD Students

Be sure to find out what classes you need to take by checking the JD graduation requirements.

LLM Students

Be sure to find out what classes you need to take by checking the LLM programs web page. If you have questions about which courses fulfill the specific requirements of your degree program, please contact the Office of Graduate and International Programs.

  • Academic advising appointments are available to all LLM students.
  • All LLM in Comparative Law students must meet with an advisor in the Office of Graduate and International Programs, prior to being permitted to register online.

Online registration through MySanDiego will continue to remain open for add/drop purposes until the 10th day of the semester.

Limits on Enrollment for JD Students

Full-Time Division

  • 16 credit maximum per semester, including non-law classes
  • 20 hours per week of employment maximum per semester

Part-Time Division

  • 11 credit maximum per semester

JD Degree Limitations for Students Who Entered Fall 2009 and Thereafter

  • Non-Law Credits
    • No more than 6 total non-law credits earned over all combined semesters may count towards your degree.
  • Supervised Independent Research Credits
    • No more than 2 Independent Supervised Research credits earned over all combined semesters may count toward your degree.
  • Journal, Moot Court, and Independent Supervised Research Credits
    • No more than 6 total Journal, Moot Court, and Independent Supervised Research credits earned over all combined semesters may count toward your degree.
  • Limits on Pass/Fail (PF/HPLF) credits
    • For students who entered Fall 2009 and Fall 2010, no more than 18 total pass/fail (PF/HPLF) credits (15 beyond the first year) earned over all combined semesters may count towards your degree.
    • For students who entered Fall 2011 and Fall 2012, no more than 16 total pass/fail (PF/HPLF) credits (15 beyond the first year) earned over all combined semesters may count towards your degree.
    • For students who entered Fall 2013, no more than 16 total pass/fail (PF/HPLF) credits (16 beyond the first year) earned over all combined semesters may count towards your degree.
    • For students who entered Fall 2016, no more than 18 total pass/fail (PF/HPLF) credits (16 beyond the first year) earned over all combined semesters may count towards your degree.

Limits on Enrollment for LLM Students

LLM students need signature approval on their registration form from Graduate and International Programs to register in excess of 13 units.

Having enrolled in the fall section will automatically enroll you in the spring section as well. You must complete both semesters in order to receive credit and you will be graded only at the conclusion of the spring semester.
