Prepare to Learn, Teach or Work Remotely
- Ensure you have the proper equipment (computers and peripherals) to support working remotely. Link to our recommendations.
- Ensure you have broadband access to connect to the Internet. Link to our recommendations.
Ensure your home network and any personal computers are set to protect you and USD.

- If you are a faculty or staff member with specialized roles and responsibilities and think you have different needs, please consult with your department to determine their expectations for working remotely. If you feel you do not have the proper equipment to support working remotely, please contact the helpdesk.

Connect to USD
Faculty and staff who want to use the Aruba Via VPN need to set up Two-Factor Authentication for their mobile phone to access the network and access administrative applications or data.

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a service available to faculty and staff that allows you to make a secure remote access connection to an organization’s network. Get connect to USD VPN [link to service catalog].
Faculty and staff can connect to on-campus Windows 10 and Mac computers.
Tools to Collaborate and Increase Productivity
Zoom for Video Conferencing/Teaching Online
Zoom is a virtual meeting application that includes videoconferencing, screen sharing, and recording. It can also be used for conference calls. All faculty, staff, and students are entitled to Zoom licenses. Log into the USD Zoom portal with your USD credentials.
USD provides Gmail as a tool for accessing your email and calendar online.
Use Google Hangouts to text, use voice, or video chat.
Use Google Voice to set up a free phone number to use across multiple devices.
Various G-Suite products.
When you are away from the office, there are several options for accessing your calls and voicemail, plus setting up Google Voice.

USD provides Google Drive and One Drive for faculty, staff, and students as the recommended tool for secure storage and sharing of USD data and documents. You need to login using your USDOne credentials to access this tool.
When you save your files in the cloud using Google Drive or One Drive, you can always access the latest version of your files no matter where you’re located as long as you’re connected to the internet.
Follow these instructions to set up and back up to your Google Drive.
- Use Google Drive File Stream to open files with the right applications, to live-sync and update, and even to keep a copy on your computer
