Remote Access Options
Option 1
Install the Software on Your Computer
Visit the ITS Software Order page to see what software titles are available for students. If a software title is not available on that list, check with the vendor's website - the software title may be offered directly through the vendor.
ITS Provided Software
These software titles are provided by ITS for all students at no cost. They require submission of a ticket, and some may require activation by the ITS Help Desk
Specialty Software
Specialty software titles may be available to some students, or may be available through the vendor. Review to see what's available for you.
Specialty software is paid software used for specialty activities like engineering or statistics.
- ITS has compiled a list of specialty software titles available for students at no cost, either through USD licensing, or through the vendor.
- Please note that vendors may change the availability of software without warning - not all information on this page is guaranteed to be up-to-date.
Utilities and Downloads
Utilities and downloads are freely available to students for immediate download without submitting a ticket.
The best way to access specialty software is to install it on your own computer — that way, you can guarantee you have access to the software when you need it.
You should install the software on your computer if...
- ITS or the vendor have provided the software for free, and
- the software is compatible with your Operating System, and
- your computer can run the software
In addition to the software that ITS provides, many vendors provide student access to their software for free (for example, Tableau is free for students). Always check with the vendor for a free version before purchasing the software.
If you need to purchase software, consider purchasing it through OnTheHub, which provides educational discounts for students.
Option 2
Access a computer station Remotely via Guacamole
Guacamole is an application that allows you to connect to a remote computer — simply start a remote session, and you will have access to a computer, with the vast majority of specialized software available for student use. Imagine walking into a Computer Lab and sitting down at a PC or a Mac - Guacamole is the virtual version!
Guacamole allows users to access computers that have specialty software, with the appropriate hardware to run the installed software. Only one user can be logged into a computer at time, just like a physical lab computer.
If you have a need for specific software that is available in any of the in-person labs on campus please reach out to your professor to submit a request for the software title. We will include the software in Guacamole hosted computers if the software is supported by ITS.
VPN is required if you reside outside the United States.
At this time you will not be able to reserve a lab as the access will be on a first come first serve basis but you may still use a computer for a lab. Guacamole computers are available 24/7. Computers are subject to maintenance windows after 7PM on a daily basis.
We will do our best to notify everyone via the Guacamole site as the ITS technical team works on these hosted devices.
- Visit the Guacamole home page and select "Log In" and choose an available computer
- Save all files in Google Drive or another cloud storage location
- Log out when complete
Yes! Guacamole is available 24/7 for students to access.
IMPORTANT NOTE!
Guacamole will only be hosting a 30 computer lab for first-come-first-serve basis.
If you cannot log into Guacamole, please contact the Help Desk to request access.
