Leave of Absence

Students planning to take time off and return to USD should request a leave of absence.

For all other students:

Please be mindful of the tuition refund deadlines for each semester. Leave of absence requests must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. on tuition refund deadline days to ensure timely processing. In order to receive a 100% tuition refund for the Fall 2026 semester, students should request a leave of absence before 5 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2026.

Students may take a leave of absence for a maximum of two consecutive semesters (for example, Fall 2026 and Spring 2027).

The deadline to request (or extend) a leave of absence for Fall 2026 is Tuesday, November 10, 2026 (the "last day to withdraw" deadline).

To fully request an undergraduate leave of absence, you will need to do the following:

Your request will be processed within 24-48 business hours. Check your sandiego.edu email for any outreach from our office.

  • Financial aid: If you have borrowed Federal Direct Student Loans, please note the program provides a grace period that you are given before entering into repayment. Going on a leave of absence may exhaust your grace period (an average grace period is six months) and you may have to begin to repay your loans. To determine the different types of federal loans, the length of your grace period before repayment, and other questions, please contact your federal loan servicer for more information. Loan servicers can be found here.
  • Review of additional departments and offices you may need to contact.

The CSS does not process medical leaves of absence or graduate student leaves or withdrawals. More information about these options is below:
