Conference to be held May 14-15 at the School for Leadership and Education Sciences

The 7th Annual Action Research Conference will take place at the University of San Diego’s School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) through the Center for Student Support Systems (CS3) along with the Department of Learning and Teaching, the Department of Leadership Studies, and the Counseling Program from May 14-15, 2010. The conference, "Empowerment and Action Research: Personal Growth, Professional Development and Social Change in Educational and Community Settings” will discuss research findings from current studies by practitioners, faculty and graduate students as well as the use of action research in education, business, and community organizations.

The conference, which in years past has attracted hundreds of researchers, faculty, school administrators, school counselors, teachers and graduate students from around the United States, is one of the few conferences in the nation that addresses action research for the betterment of schools and communities.

Jack Whitehead, PhD, visiting Fellow at the University of Bath and a leading authority in the field of Action Research will deliver the keynote address. Whitehead will speak on global networks supporting improved practices in education.

Sessions at the conference will include a presentation from the Binational Action Research Collaborative (BARC) on how to empower cross-cultural understanding through collaborative action research, as well as a discussion on how action research can empower the educational community. Participants will have opportunities to work with peers in breakout sessions throughout the two-day conference.

Sponsors of the event include The Parker Foundation, USD Department of Learning and Teaching, USD School Counseling Program, Center for Student Support Systems, USD Department of Leadership Studies and the Collaborative Action Research Network (CARN).

CARN will also hold a study day on Thursday, May 13. This is the first study day ever held in the U.S. Whitehead, along with a limited number of conference participants, will visit project sites currently engaged in conducting action research. The site visits include interaction with practitioners utilizing action research to address strengthening practice. The study day concludes with the Action Research Conference pre-conference seminar at which Whitehead will facilitate a discussion of action research and empowerment.
